It's nice to be at writing camp on a rainy day!
This morning our groups started out separate. The younger writers, with Mrs. Follansbee, did a quickwrite where they picked one (out of five) leads and wrote to it. After sharing and snack, they did three stations:
1) freewrite 2) a "Show, not tell" station 3) an interview about something that scared them. Ask your child about what scared them and what they learned in that station! Students are also being pulled by Nick to do an "About the Author" for their final book or magazine.
Ms. Walton's group started by reading 2 pieces of writing by her friend and town resident, Lissa Jones. Lissa occasionally publishes funny (FUNNY) pieces in New Hampshire Magazine, and for about a year she published monthly in The Concord Monitor. Ask your kids to describe the piece of writing they dissected (one was about Syrup, and one was about cooking). After reading her writing, we did a quick write on Pet Peeves. From there, we took a long block of writing and sharing.
In the afternoon our first event was having Lissa Jones come speak! She is a funny lady who loves to write funny stuff! She talked about her writing, her process, and what she loves about being a writing (well, let's face it...it's what she loves about being funny!). Campers who wanted to, learned how to use "Storyboard That!," did. You can ask your child (mostly the younger campers) if they made a comic strip!
We had LOTS of long blocks of WRITING today. It is so amazing to see a group of young people so interested and committed to writing!
STORYBIRD -INFO
In the past we've had open use of a great website called Storybird. They have migrated to a subscription, and we paid for that, HOWEVER, we are finding some glitches. In order to access our Storybird class, an email address is required. If your child is an older camper (going into eighth grade and above), they may use their school email to activate the account. Others will need an email address to get to this site. Could we use your email address? The only problem with this is that you will need to open the email and grant access before your child can use it. If you are okay with this and your child is interested, please check your email by noon tomorrow and grant access.
FRIDAY CELEBRATION
On Friday we only have camp until noon. Our tradition is to gather at 11:30am for a celebration of our writers. Please sign up to bring a snack or send in dinks or paper goods. We hope you can come (or invite grandparents!). I you have to come during your lunch break, feel free to bring a lunch to eat here. We'll send more information about the celebration later. For now, you can sign up to bring items here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C054DA8AA28A2FD0-writing1
